While the Internet is a wonderful educational and research tool, one of the biggest concerns is how to keep your children safe while they browse online.  However, if you are diligent in your search, you will find a multitude of tools and resources to help keep your family safe while they are online.  

One of the tools that you can implement for your family is browser blocking.  Of course, some browsers are better at this task than others.  But as the Internet develops and improves, you can expect to see improvement in this area also.  If you are using Firefox to browse the web,you may have noticed that it lacks any built in Internet filtering capabilities.  However, you can download the freely available ProCon Predator extension for Firefox which uses a list of preapproved sites to help keep your family safe.  Apple Safari works in conjunction with the Mac OS to help keep your children from visiting someone a website.  And with the Windows Vista operating system, parental controls are incorporated in Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

You also now find that many of the companies offer and security software to protect your computer from unwanted viruses and downloads now include parental controls.  One of the good things about this concept is that these controls are optional and you download them only if you choose to.  Some of the companies that include this optional download feature are Symantec Norton Internet Security and Norton 360, CA, and Trend Micro.  You will find that the parental controls are standard and already included in such software as  ZoneAlarm and  McAfee.
